Fine Lines One of the main points in the article “Why America Should Outlaw Spanking” by Emily Bazelon is about how many rights parents have in America. The main example talked about in this article is about corporal punishment and whether or not parents have the right to spank their child or not. Reasons being that some extreme parents take it too far sometimes, leaving bruises and possibly even fracturing bones. Politian’s believe that outlawing spanking would assist the courts in help make a ruling about child abuse. Spanking is a necessary evil that helps correct incorrect behavior. Growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s we were always told that if

It was stated in this article that Baumrind did a study to show the link between reliance on physical punishment that is associated with harm of a child. It showed that parents that spank their child occasionally did not have children that were angry as a result of the punishment. Parents did not have to worry about simply hitting their child out of anger, or the possibility of their child becoming some random serial killer because they were spanked as a child. Kids knew how to respond to the punishment they received back in the 90’s. Parents were not taking it too far and the few parents that were taken to jail and received the maximum amount of punishment the law would allow. Kids now days believe they are entitled to everything, which as a result do not know how to handle being spanked, often because it does not occur in the home. Honestly there is a fine line between spanking your child and abusing them. Parents give their kids whatever the child desires now days, which results in a spoiled rotten child. Those children do not how to work for anything. When they do something wrong they expect their parents to just simply deal with it and when the parent decides otherwise they give the parent attitude and throw a little hissy fit. As parents, adults have the right to do what they deem fit in all fifty states. Outlawing spanking will not make it any easier to
Many see spanking as a form of parental rights and that the parent has the right to raise their child the way they consider most appropriate. Those in favor of spanking, also hold there is little evidence that moderate spanking is harmful. Further, many believe that discipline problems among children have recently increased, and partially attribute the boost to the decline of both parental authority and the use of spanking.
Spanking has been the way of discipline for many years, but in reality it is child abuse. Spanking, also known as corporal punishment, to me is any kind of negative physical contact to a child with the intention to cause pain as a way of discipline. Anything from a pat on the butt, to the use of a belt or paddle on a child, or a smack on the hand or mouth can be considered spanking. Child abuse is violence, and "violence is an act carried out with the intention, or perceived intention, of causing physical pain or injury to another person" (Straus 7). The intentions of both spanking and violence are to cause pain and the only difference is that violence also covers acts of injury. So, are parents actually teaching their children
Should spanking and other forms of physical punishment be illegal. Strict parents say yes, leniant parents say no. What can be the affects of such behavior? A child who has gotten itno trouble may be victim of this punishment that has been accepted moreso in third world countries. A mother of four who has been fed up has a youngest child. When a child acts up, it can be seen as okay to spank or discipline. A displanory action. Why not? Why isn't that okay? Usually when a parent spanks the child, the child retreats and does not commit whatever the offense. They, "are cured" or are they now terrified of their caregivers? What if the child has taken negative contitations after recieving a spank? The child may go to school sad, and
The main reason that parents use spanking as a discipline technique is because it is what they received when they were children. However, in many cases spanking has nothing to do with helping the child. It is used as a quick solution to stop negative behavior with no real regard for the long-term outcome. Parents often spank their children because they themselves are angry. These parents simply cannot handle a situation and take it out on their child. Spanking might be more accepted if it was the only, or the most successful, form of discipline, but it is not. Spanking is simply a short-term fix of a child 's discipline problems. Two of the widely used alternatives to spanking are the time-out and restriction punishments. Time-out is most effective when administered to children under ten years of age, and a restriction mostly benefits children over ten years old. Both of these methods, while effective, also have a positive influence on the child, they teach the child discipline without the use of force, help the child
The more a child is spanked between the ages of 3 to 5 the more likely they will become aggressive (Online Psychology). Spanking can cause mental health problems and can have anti-social behavioral issues. Children that get spanked tend to defy their parents and have cognitive difficulties. When parents spank they think it is to help their child now what is right and wrong, but spanking has accidental detrimental outcomes. You don’t have to hurt a child to punish them, in 2014 about 80% of people spanked their kids. If the parent was spanked as a child the parent is more likely to support spanking
Spanking Isn’t Child Abuse, It’s Common Sense, by Ruban Navarrette deals with one of the biggest controversies in parenting ever since the twenty-first century: spanking your child. Ruban’s main point in this article is that fear is essential to respect and children won’t do what we tell them to do unless they fear
Spanking has received a bad reputation dues to increase in child abuse that is report yearly. In 2012 2.9 million cases of child abuse was reported in the United States this neglect and abuse. (Safe Horizon, 2012) As a child I was spank, punished and talked to about what was acceptable behavior, respecting all adults and people in authority. As a child I would have rather receive a spanking because my mom never stop talking but maybe that because I got so few spanking.
I believe that spanking achild is okay within certain limits. I am a product of spanking while I was growing up. Though I did not get them very often, however my brother did. I can say there was a little bit of fear that came with the spankings but that instilled in me reasons to behave to and listen to my parents. Obviously I didn't want to feel the pain of a spanking again. I never felt the type of fear where I believed my parent's would injure me or cause severe harm. I never felt any less love or hatred for either of my parent's. I never felt the want or need to contact the police. I feel as if that is a big concern with children today. They threaten to call the law on anyone who puts a hand on them. I feel they want an easy "out"
Kids get extremely out of control, although some parents do not know how to control their child or children and want to know a way to teach them how to respect what their parents say. Spanking can solve this issue, some say its child abuse, but it’s just discipline since 2014 close to 81% of Americans agree with spanking, but since it has dropped, as parents decide to spoil their kids and when they're bad they take away a video game for a little while. Spanking should be accepted in every state where it is not considered child abuse, parents should accept that and should learn to discipline their kids.
If all parents would spank their children, kids of today’s society would behave. Parents should spank their children for many reasons. The starter reason is because children who are spanked regularly for their wrongdoings are better behaved than those who are allowed to do whatever they want. This topic can become very controversial depending on the way it is looked at. There are certain standards that should be followed.
Spanking has been a controversial topic among many parents. Some believe it is just a form of discipline and is okay, while others believe that this is abuse or violence and it will harm the child in the long run.
Many studies on cases of adults who have tendency to perpetuate abuses, either as a victim or as an abuser, are traced in the pattern of violence experienced at home, and many are reportedly experience being physically violated by spanking during their childhood. Despite the information and advocacy available in almost all media these days, there are still parents who thought that spanking their children to emphasize discipline is still beneficial. The benefits cited by those supporting spanking as acceptable method of discipline varied across culture and race. Generally, there are three views or positions about spanking as a form of discipline (Benject C. & Kazdin A, 2003) : Pro-corporal punishment, anti-corporal punishment, and conditional corporal punishment.
Growing up, did your parents or guardians ever spank you for something you did wrong? I can remember getting my behind swatted when I did something wrong. I also remember my mom would always say, "You will get into less trouble if you tell me the truth." According to Reeves and Cuddy (2014), in the year of 2012, over 70 percent of American's were in agreement that there are times when a child needs a "good, hard spanking". Of course, not everyone has the same opinion on how often or severe the punishment should be. So, should spanking your child, when they are in need of one, be banned?
Corporal punishment or spanking does not only hurt physically but can lead to emotional and behavioral problems down the road for children. When parents spank children they are using the notion of fear to teach them what not to do, but it does not explain what is right when it comes to appropriate behaviors. In addition, children learn that when they
Corporal punishment is hared way for children. According to Carol Bower, in the article "Positive Discipline and a Ban on Corporal Punishment Will Help Stop Cycles of Violence." parents rely on corporal punishment on their children because violence is an acceptable way to solve problems. “The data showed that 57% of parents with children under 18 used corporal punishment, and 33% used severe corporal punishment in the form of beatings” (Bower). Many parents chose to use corporal punishment on children by giving harsh spankings. This research paper will show the corporal punishment against children by Spanking. Corporal punishment is inhumane and goes against human rights. Parents must not use corporal punishment on their children, so parents have to define the best way to avoid corporal punishment by using a nonviolent way of discipline.
