Analyzing literature is one of the most important steps to understanding the author’s purpose for writing a novel. When students analyze literature or write an analytical essay, they often mistake it as summarizing the plot of the book. However, analyzing literature is more in depth than just summarizing because many key aspects go into finding the hidden messages of a book. When students summarize the plot of a book, they are often missing many literary devices, such as metaphors, foreshadowing, and imagery. They are also putting the plot of the book into their own words in which they may forget to add the theme of the story. Analyzing literature is much more in-depth because students can include the theme or main idea that the author has …show more content…
Annotating is a process in which students highlight or make a note of any literary device in the book, important plot points, or connections between the plot/characters to the real world. Annotation is useful to the analyzing process of literature because it refines the book down into the most important details. An example why annotating is important is when I annotated Lord of the Flies by William Golding. One of the things I took notes on were the important plot points. In the book, there is a part where the boys split up into two groups— with one group representing law and order, and the other representing savagery. I also took notes of literary devices in the book, such as foreshadowing. One example of foreshadowing in Lord of the Flies was when Piggy comes upon a conch shell and is enamored by its beauty. This is a foreshadow of how important the conch shell will be to the other boys later on in the book, in which it will be used as a tool for keeping order within the …show more content…
When students use their skills to analyze literature, they must annotate to look for the main plot points or literary devices, locate the theme of the novel, and determine if the novel is an allegory. Even though analyzing a book is often confused with summarizing a book, they are entirely different things. While summarizing a book is just writing a few sentences about the most important points in the plot, analyzing a book requires you to look deeper into the story and find what the author’s purpose is. One technique students can use when to analyze literature is annotating. Annotating is a process in which students highlight or make a note of any literary device in the book, important plot points, or connections between the plot/characters to the real world. This method is necessary for organizing the novel into its important parts. Another technique students can use when analyzing literature is to find the theme of the book. A theme is a central idea or a message that the author is trying to convey in his or her book. Finding the theme is important because the theme connects the many parts of the plot, such as the background, climax, and resolution. The last technique students can use when analyzing literature is to discover if the novel is an allegory for something greater. An allegory is a piece of writing that uses characters or objects to symbolize a particular
Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading by Kylene Beers and Bob Probst – Notice and Note introduces six “signposts” that alert readers to significant moments in a literary work. It encourages students to read closely and enables the reader to explore the text at a deeper level, by finding evidence from the text to support their interpretations. Using this Notice and Note method allows students to become more responsible, independent readers. This book is available for purchase in many different stores or online, at websites such as Barnes and Noble and Amazon.
Tie to audience: Why is it important to know how to annotate a book properly ? That is because of how Common Core standards want us to be able to read and comprehend passages independently and if you to go to English 2A or English 3 Honors, annotating would become a necessary skill to have. Even later on
Re-read the book or parts of the book. Use post-its to mark pages where you find examples of figurative language (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification), imagery (descriptions that appeal to the five senses), and descriptions of the setting, characters and conflict.
I learned that annotating is good for you because it helps you understand the book when you read it more. It also gives you a deeper meaning of the book. It also helps you because it helps you in reading and writing. So I my book my annotations help me understand it more because if I just read the book I can just forget everything I read. Also when I annotate I know what’s going on I who this person or I think I know what’s happening next. Also annotating is good for me because it helps me know the book more and more when I get closer to that part or when I done with the book. Like for example annotating is asking questions or writing down words you don’t know and predicting and all of that. My challenge is to make the book better for me when
Take a look at the time and the place of the novel and explain if they switch around. How do the plot and the setting serve the meaning of the novel? Is the plot linear or nonlinear? Why so? Is the setting general or specific?
In a piece of literary work there are many aspects that go along with having the reader be able to engage with and understand the story the narrator is telling. Literary aspects like tone, symbolism and setting is an extremely important part in understanding how and why a character acts. Knowing the time and place a story is set in helps the reader understand what is going on, who the characters are, and sets the reader up to understand the story that is about to unfold.
Select a complex, meaningful, and relevant text. All students must read and use annotations for the appropriate portion of the text that is being discussed. Students are grouped using a variety of factors based on lexile scores, learning types, and workability of the
Annotating is something I almost always do. When reading, taking notes always helps me to remember what has happened. When I have a brain fart, all I have to do is look back at the little notes I have written, and usually I can recall what has happened. If I am reading my own book, I just mention little thoughts in the margins. However,
When a reader reads for meaning opposed to reading like a writer, it makes the text easier to annotate. In Mrs. Wade’s English class, I received a writing prompt and then proceeded to annotate the text by highlighting key words. The writing prompt was to decide and explain if computers should be accessible in classrooms. Out of all the words in the prompt, only five were chosen as key words. The text is easier to annotate while reading for meaning since “Reading for meaning requires you to use your knowledge and experience to create meaning.” Doing so, allows the content to resonate with the reader causing them to find key words to highlight and underline. Picking out key words would be
I decided to annotate pages 2 and 3 from our "Writing Analytically" textbook because the contents of those two pages helped me grasp the importance of analyzing information more. Since the copy of the textbook that I have is an e-book, I was originally going to annotate them on my computer. But I realized that my annotations on my laptop were very restricted, and were not as in-depth as I would like them to be, so I decided to print out both pages and annotate them the "old-fashioned" way. My annotating style doesn't have as much structure in comparison to the techniques that others incorporate, but it has proven fruitful for me so far. To annotate, I used a couple of different items. Among these are blue and pink pens, and a yellow highlighter.
In today's time reading, examining, and writing literary works seem so complex, but in Subject and Strategy: A Writer's Reader by Paul Eschholz and AlfredRosa, the authors provides methods to help readers establish the ability to read like writer instead of just reading. Chapter one consist of long term strategies and gives the readers the chance to put those strategies given to use. The stories within the chapter helps engage the mind . Identifying the theme becomes easier as the reader learn the different ways to locate and establish a theme. For example reputation of a theme leads to the theme which help develop the thesis, the main idea concretize within the text. In chapter one the story about the teacher stood out the most. Even though
The process of reading and annotating gives students a strong understanding of the material the professor has assigned. Before reading, a student must obtain an idea of why the professor assigned the text; it will give information which is needed in class. Skimming the text is to retrieve the main idea. The bolded words, title of paragraphs, bullet points, etc. can give the reading a baseline of what they are about to read. These are known as “visual signals;” the signals attracts the reader’s eye to show an importance. When a student reads the text, highlighting or underlining critical words or sentences can benefit the reader to capture the key points. Annotating can guide the reader’s thoughts, questions, and
I love reading and read everything I can. I enjoy discussing what I read and analyzing the elements. I am hoping that this class will help me learn to focus on particular aspects of the plot, story, and analyzing the author’s intentions. I am think that being given particular points to analyze will advance my critical thinking and allow me to apply the skills we learn in all types of thinking and analysis in the future.
In the workshop, the professor talked about how to annotate. In the past, when I read, I seldom took notes; therefore, I easily forgot what I read. Also, I did not pay much attention to vocabularies. I did read a lot of books and articles, but my writing skills did not improve. Annotation is a more effective way of reading. By annotating while reading, I am able to learn new vocabularies, sentence constructions and writing strategies. It is also easier to understand the argument of the writers, because the thesis, topic sentences, and evidence are all included in my notes.
Students learn about the purposes and techniques of annotation by examining a text closely and critically. They will practice analyzing a sample annotation and identifying the purpose for annotating an article. Students will then practice annotation through a careful reading of a story excerpt, using specific guidelines and writing as many annotations as possible. Students then work in pairs to peer review their annotations, practice using a web tool to annotate a story excerpt on their group level and PowerPoint to present annotations, and reflect on how creating annotations can change a reader 's perspective through personal connection with text.
